Riding a Bicycle in Austria
The main legal framework for conduct in traffic is the Strassenverkehrsordnung (STVO). For ciclists the most important points are:
In general, your bike must be fully equiped (fenders, etc. ... exc. racing bikes). In everyday practice it is important to have a functional light when it is getting dark.
Helmets are not mandatory for adults. Children until the age of 12 must wear helmets when cycling.
If there is a bikepath, you are not allowed to ride your bike on the road.
At cross-walks (zebra-crossing) without traffic lights, pedestrians always have the right of way.
